- Nossig, Alfred
- (1864-1943)Polish author, sculptor and musician. He was born in Lemberg. He initially belonged to the circle of assimilationist Polish Jews, but later he became a supporter of Zionism and advocated the establishment of a Jewish state in Palestine. In 1908 he founded a Jewish colonization organization. He published studies about Jewish national problems, and his work on Jewish statistics served as the basis for the Jewish Statistical and Demographic Institute. He also produced sculp-tures with Jewish themes. He lived in Berlin, but was expelled to Poland when the Nazis rose to power; suspected of collaborating with the Nazis, he was sentenced to death by the Jewish underground.
